The Napa Valley AVA encompasses the valley of the Napa River in Napa County - basically the whole county southwest of Lake Berryessa. It was the second appellation declared by the US government on January 28th, 1981. As one of the most famous and prolific viticultural regions in the world, the Napa Valley is subdivided into a number of AVAs.
