Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a variety of the European grape species Vitis vinifera. It comes from Croatia where it is called Crljenak Kastelanski. In northern Italy it is also called Primitivo. Zinfandel is rather unique in that this variety is made into both a red and a white wine. In 2006 the California legislature passed a bill making Zinfandel the state's historic varietal, but governor Schwarzenegger vetoed it.
