France

Cultivation of Vitis vinifera has taken place in France since the ancient Greeks first planted colonies on the Mediterranean coast. Since the 16th century French winemaking has been governed by laws which today take the form of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC). Each terrior, defined by the land and local viticultural methodology, is strictly regulated. However, varietal wines labelled merely as from France can include grapes from several AOCs.
