The Wines of Deutschland

in vino veritas

Cultivation Vitis vinifera has taken place in Germany since the days of the Roman Empire. Today there are 13 quality Weinbaugebiete (winegrowing regions) located in 7 of the 16 Bundesländer, especially along the Rhine river and its tributaries. Like all EU countries there are several grades of wine:

Tafelwein - table wine usually drunken locally. (more info)
Landwein - wine from specific regions using non-traditional methods and/or varietals. (more info)
Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete (QbA) - a tradtional, high quality wine. (more info)
Prädikatswein - more specifically regulated quality wine. (more info)

In some regions of Deutschland chaptalization is permitted, but many winemakers in the country hold some juice unfermented as a Süssreserve, to sweeten the wine to a desired level after fermentation.
