The Wines of Deutschland
in vino veritas
Cultivation Vitis vinifera has taken place in Germany since the days of the Roman Empire. Today there are 13 quality
regions) located in 7 of the 16 Bundesländer, especially along the Rhine river and its tributaries. Like all EU countries there are several grades
Tafelwein - table wine usually drunken locally.
Landwein - wine from specific regions using non-traditional methods and/or varietals.
Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete (QbA) - a tradtional, high quality wine.
Prädikatswein - more specifically regulated quality wine.
In some regions of Deutschland chaptalization is permitted, but many winemakers in the country
hold some juice unfermented as a Süssreserve, to sweeten the wine to a desired level after fermentation.
