Wine of Origin

The Wine of Origin system was created in 1973 and is administered by SAWIS, the Suid-Afrika Wynbedryf-Inligting & -Stelsels. The area designations in order of decreasing size are Geographical Units, Regions, Districts, Wards and Estates. The latter four are always found inside a Geographical Unit, but not necessarily nested inside a larger designation. For example the Goudveld Estate is inside the Northern Cape Geographical Unit but not inside any Region, District or Ward.
