Sangiovese Sangiovese is a variety of the European grape species Vitis vinifera developed in Italy and grown in smaller amounts worldwide. Having been developed over millenia, the name means "Blood of Jove" in Italian. This wine is the primary varietal in the Chianti blend as well as being the Brunello of Brunello di Montalcino. It is also sometimes called Prugnolo Gentile.
