Pinot Noir Pinot Noir is a variety of the European grape species Vitis vinifera developed in France and grown widely throughout the world. It is known for its fragility and affinity for colder climates, rare among the red varieties. In Italia it is also called Pinot Nero and in Deutschland Spätburgunder. In France red wines are called "noir" which means black, and the Pinot Noir grape is also fashioned into a white sparkling wine, Blanc de Noir, which literatally means white from black. Pinot Noir also became the first varietal of Vitis vinifera and indeed the first fruit to have its genome sequenced in 2007.
