Alicante Bouschet

Alicante Bouschet is a wine grape variety developed in France by Henri Bouschet. In 1865 he crossed Grenache with his father's Petit Bouschet to create this new varietal. Alicante Bouschet has red flesh which color makes it useful for blending with light red wine. In Spain it is also known as Garnacha Tintorera. This varietal was planted heavily during Prohibition in California for export to the East Coast because its thick skin made it resistant to rot during the transportation process.
