Phylloxera An aphid-like bug native to eastern North America which prefers to dine on the roots of Vitis vinifera grapevines. When it spread worldwide in the 19th century it decimated grape crops until Thomas Munson started grafting American rootstocks which were resistant to phylloxera onto European vines.
